Leos
The Hendrick Hudson Lions Club is very proud to sponsor the Hendrick Hudson Leos Club, comprised of students in seventh through twelfth grades at Blue Mountain Middle School and Hendrick Hudson High School.  The Leos were officially chartered on September 6, 2007 with 32 active members. They meet the 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month at Mt. Carmel Hall in Verplanck, from 7:00-8:00 p.m.

Since 1957, when the first club was organized, the Leo movement has grown to more than 5,500 clubs in more than 130 countries with approximately 140,000 members.

Joining a Leo club is a great way to become involved in your community, serve as a leader to your peers and make friends

The objective of the Leo Club Program was (and still is):

"...to provide the youth of the world an opportunity for development and contribution, individually and collectively, as responsible members of the local, national and international community."

The Leo club motto is:

Leadership - Leos develop skills as organizers, time managers and motivators of their peers.

Experience - Leos learn the importance of cooperation through community service.

Opportunity - Membership provides young people with a chance to excel, to develop positive character traits, and to receive recognition for their contributions to the community.

Today, the Leo Club Program is stronger than ever. Community service remains the cornerstone of the program. Like their Lion counterparts, Leo club members enjoy serving their neighbors and watching positive results unfold.

Relay For Life
Along with the Lions, the Leos helped raise over $3,000 for the American Cancer Society during the Relay For Life.

St. Jude’s Walkathon

On April 29, the Leos worked on their first community service project in conjunction with the Hispanic Honor Society and Student Government at Hendrick Hudson High School.  The two aforementioned groups sponsored their 2nd Annual Walk-a-thon to raise money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  The Leo Club took part by offering baked goods for sale to those walking for this great cause.  More than $90 was raised, and all will be donated to the hospital.  Besides providing tasty snacks, the Walk-a-thon was a way for the small number of Leos to grow by introducing prospective members to the ideas and tasks the club wishes to perform in the near future.  By the end of the event, over twenty email addresses had been collected for the distribution of further Leo news.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel’s Italian Feast

In July, the Leos volunteered at the annual feast in Verplanck by selling various toys and baked goods to citizens of the community.  Along with running a sales booth, the Leos took part in the parade on Friday, July 20.  Elmo and the Lion mascot marched alongside the Leos and were a big success.  All of the proceeds from the baked goods went to the Share Our Strength Foundation, which works with the Food Network each year to help end childhood hunger in America.

Easter Egg Hunt
Each year, the Hendrick Hudson Lions Club sponsors an Easter Egg hunt that is free to local children and their families. In 2007, over 200 children collected nearly 5,000 eggs filled with candy, toys and prizes.
